This National Park, named after the mountain range that runs through it, is just south of Yellowstone National Park and connected to Yellowstone by the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway. The park took several decades to be created due to local opposition from many fronts. The original park was created in 1929 by an act of congress. Many problems ensued over the next 20+ years before the park became the “New” Grand Teton National Park, in 1950.
The park was created by visionaries who wanted to preserve the area for the generations of Americans to come. The park protects some of the most stunning mountain scenery and diverse wildlife anywhere in North America. The park ranges from 6,400 feet on the valley floor to 13,700 feet on the windswept granite summit of the Grand Teton. During the summer the mountain sides are cover with wildflowers that paint the meadows in many colors. Crystal blue lakes fill glacial cirques and noisy waterfalls cascade down rocky slopes to the larger lakes below.
As in all of the National Parks, camping, fishing, and hiking abound all through the park. Be sure to plan your trip here well in advance to have a safe and very enjoyable time. There are many guilds to camp grounds, ranger stations, guided tours, and hiking trails. Take a look at the attached web site for much more information and guidance.
